Pima, Supima, and Organic Cotton, Explained

Cotton marketing blurs two unrelated questions into one word. How the cotton was grown is an ethics question. How long its fibers are is a durability question. A label can answer either, both, or neither, and once you split them, every tee wall in the category reads clearly.

The durability axis: staple length

Cotton quality is mostly fiber length, called staple. Longer fibers spin into smoother, stronger yarn with fewer exposed ends, which means less pilling and longer life.

  • Regular cotton is short-to-medium staple. Fine for multipacks, and the reason $8 tees go fuzzy by fall.
  • Pima is extra-long staple, roughly half an inch longer than regular fibers. The catch: the word “pima” on a US label is largely unregulated, with no required origin or verification.
  • Supima is the trademarked fix, 100% American-grown pima with certified origin and purity. Same fiber, enforced paperwork.

The ethics axis: organic

Organic describes farming, no synthetic pesticides or GMO seed, and says nothing about fiber length. Most organic cotton is actually shorter-staple than pima, so an organic tee can be the ethical choice and still pill first. Verification matters here too, since “organic” unbacked is a claim, and the certifications behind it, GOTS strongest among them, are a label skill of their own.

The axes combine. Quince sells organic Peruvian pima, long-staple and organically grown, which is the both-answers option its $16 basics wall builds up to. Pact maxes the ethics axis with standard-staple cotton. Everlane runs verified organic content in deliberately cut basics.

Find the durability signal first: pima, Supima, or long-staple named means the tee is built to outlast the cheap ones. Then the ethics signal: a named certification beats the bare adjective. A tee with neither signal is a commodity, priced right only under $12 or so. A tee with both is the category’s quiet best buy. Weight matters too, since heavier jersey generally survives more washes, and how you wash is half the lifespan regardless of fiber.

Frequently asked

Is pima cotton better than organic cotton?
They answer different questions. Pima is a longer fiber that wears smoother and pills less. Organic describes pesticide-free farming. A tee can be either, both, or neither, and both together is the strongest buy.
What is the difference between pima and Supima?
Supima is trademarked, verified pima grown in the US, with certified purity. Plain "pima" on a label is largely unregulated, so the word alone carries less guarantee.
Does organic cotton last as long as regular cotton?
Grown identically, farming method barely changes durability, but most organic cotton is shorter-staple than pima, so it typically pills sooner than long-staple tees. Care habits move lifespan more than the organic label does.
What cotton should a good t-shirt be made of?
For maximum life, long-staple cotton like pima or Supima in a mid-to-heavy jersey. For ethics, certified organic. Quince’s organic Peruvian pima line covers both in one fabric.
