What Size Rug Do You Actually Need?

The most common rug mistake is buying one that’s too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room like a postage stamp makes the whole space feel cheaper than it is. The fix costs nothing but a tape measure and the right rule for each room.
The three sizes that cover most rooms
About 70 percent of area rugs sold are 5x8, 8x10, or 9x12 feet, because those fit the majority of real living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. Start by assuming you need one of these, then size up or down from there. When you’re between two sizes, go bigger almost every time.
Living room
At a minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. That visually ties the seating together instead of leaving furniture stranded on bare floor. For a more grounded, high-end look, fit all the legs on.
Aim for a rug that runs at least 6 to 8 inches wider than your sofa on each side. For most living rooms that lands you on an 8x10 or a 9x12.
Bedroom
A bedroom rug should extend 18 to 24 inches past the bed on both sides and at the foot, so you step onto softness when you get up. Quick sizing by bed:
- Twin: 5x8
- Full: 6x9
- Queen: 8x10
- King: 9x12
Dining room
The rule here is simple. All four legs of every chair should stay on the rug even when pulled out to sit down. A chair that catches the rug edge as you scoot back is a daily annoyance.
Go about 4 feet wider than your table overall, which usually means 24 inches of rug on every side. For a table that seats 6 to 8, that’s an 8x10 or 9x12.
The one rule for every room
Leave a border of bare floor between the rug and the walls, about 18 inches in a small room and 24 in a large one. Never run a rug wall to wall like carpet. That frame of floor is what makes the rug read as intentional.
Once you’ve nailed the size, the next decision is what it’s made of. Our rug material guide covers which fiber holds up where, and if you want the look for less, start with the best affordable area rugs.
Frequently asked
- What size rug do I need for a queen bed?
- An 8x10 is the standard fit for a queen. It lets the rug extend 18 to 24 inches past both sides and the foot of the bed, so you step onto it when you get up.
- Should all my furniture sit on the rug?
- It can, and all-legs-on looks the most polished, but it is not required. In a living room, getting at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs onto the rug is enough to tie the space together.
- Can a rug be too big?
- Yes. Leave a border of bare floor to the walls, roughly 18 inches in a small room and 24 in a large one. A rug that runs almost to the walls looks like wall-to-wall carpet and shrinks the room.
- What is the most useful rug size to buy?
- An 8x10 fits the largest number of rooms, from a living room to a queen bedroom to a dining table for six. If you are unsure between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the better call.
