The Simple Summer Skin Routine

Summer is when ten-step routines quietly die. Heat, sweat, and vacation mornings beat complicated shelfware every time, and honestly, that’s fine. A summer routine needs to do three jobs, protect, hydrate, and not melt by noon, and it can do all three in four steps.
Step 1: a gentle cleanse
Once in the morning, once at night, with whatever gentle cleanser you already like. Summer adds sweat and sunscreen to the list of things that need washing off, so the evening cleanse is the one not to skip. Nothing fancy required, and this is the last step we’ll spend a sentence on.
Step 2: light hydration
Swap heavy winter creams for something light. A gel moisturizer, a hydrating serum, or a prep layer like rhode’s Glazing Milk if the glazed look is your look. The goal is skin that’s comfortable under sunscreen, not a stack of layers that slides in the heat. If your moisturizer pills under SPF, it’s too much moisturizer for July.
Step 3: SPF, the actual skincare
This is the step doing the anti-aging work everything else advertises. A quarter teaspoon of a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on face and neck, every morning, sunny or not. The whole cluster of decisions lives on this site now: which sunscreen, which filter family, how much and how often, and the over-makeup top-up. If you adopt one thing from this whole page, it’s this step.
Step 4: one treat
Routines survive on the part you look forward to. Keep exactly one: the rhode lip treatment on the nightstand, a weekly at-home manicure, a mist you love. One treat keeps the routine a pleasure. Five treats turn it back into shelfware, and shelfware is what summer just killed.
What about actives?
Retinoids, acids, and vitamin C all have their place, and summer doesn’t ban them. But they raise the stakes on the SPF step, several make skin more sun-sensitive, and this guide’s job is the foundation, not the treatment plan. Build the four steps into a habit first. Everything else stacks on top in September, when your bathroom counter gets ambitious again.
Frequently asked
- What order should a simple routine go in?
- Cleanser, then hydration, then sunscreen as the final morning step. Makeup goes over the SPF. At night, cleanse and moisturize, no sunscreen needed.
- Do I need sunscreen if I am inside all day?
- A morning application is still the standard advice, since windows, errands, and commutes add up. The two-hour reapplication rule only kicks in during real sun exposure.
- Can I skip moisturizer in summer?
- If your skin is comfortable and your sunscreen hydrates enough, a separate moisturizer is optional. Oily skin often does better with a light gel or nothing under SPF in July.
- When should I use retinol or acids?
- At night, once the basic routine is a habit, and with extra attention to daily SPF since several actives increase sun sensitivity. They are a fall project, not a beach-week one.
